The original was a hopeful lockdown project that has inspired many others. This special piece is made to order and will take up to 3 weeks to make.
This is a handmade replica item created from found natural fibres, wool. ornamental beads and upcycled, felted jumpers. Please note due to the sustainable nature of the piece, some beads and colours may vary slightly from the original.
The driftwood is from a beach scavenge in Carmarthen sands (Wales) on a family holiday and grabbed me as it was the perfect baton for a weaving. I had to drill through the wood and string the loom through these holes as I wanted it to be an integral part of the fabric. The beads are remnants of scavenging from jewellery boxes many moons ago with my grandmother, who taught me all things have value and their own kind of beauty. This work incorporates the natural and the up-cycled, the new and the readymade.
The art of weaving is a mindful craft that grounds and engages you and I hope to convey that sensory delight when you feel my work. I wanted to make something wonderfully rustic that people would want to reach out and touch, as a kind of antidote to online living! Perhaps the materials and process will inspire you to create something to go with it?
